Calcium acetate is used remove excess phosphates from your body when it has too much. It is usually given in addition to your other kidney treatment.
Take Calcium acetate exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take it together with food or immediately after a meal.
If you miss a dose, do not take the missed dose in between meals. Take the next scheduled dose with the next meal.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- hypercalcaemia (abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood)
- kidney stone (abnormal stone-like mass formation in the kidney)
as Calcium acetate may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- kidney disease
- hypoparathyroid disease (low level of parathyroid hormone in the body)
- other conditions that may cause high levels of calcium in the blood
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
For as long as you are taking this medicine, you may need to have regular blood tests to check the calcium, phosphorus and parathyroid hormone level in your blood, while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
Calcium acetate may cause any of the following side effects: hypercalcaemia (abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood), diarrhoea, constipation, bloating and gas.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- vitamin D supplements
- medicines for heart problems e.g. digoxin, verapamil, gallopamil
- antibiotics e.g. ciprofloxacin, doxycycline
- antacids containing calcium
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Calcium acetate.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
